DID YOU KNOW? Although similar games of hitting a ball and running to a predesignated spot were played much earlier in American history, Alexander Cartwright, in 1845, developed rules that gave structure to the game we now know as baseball.

Cartwright established the game limits of three outs and nine innings, set the bases ninety feet apart, and created marked foul lines.

The first baseball teams were amateurs, until 1869 when the Cincinnati Red Stockings were established as the first professional team. (Players were paid six hundred to two thousand dollars per season.)

In 1876, the National League was formed and the American League came into being in 1900. In 1903, the best team from each league, the Boston Pilgrims, (later called the Boston Red Sox), and the the Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively, met in a best-of-nine-games series, which went down in baseball history as the first official World Series.
