ACC

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was created in 1953. The charter members were the universities of Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest. Shortly after the formation of the conference, the University of Virginia was admitted as the eighth member. The University of South Carolina left the conference in 1971; Georgia Tech joined the ACC in 1978, bringing the total back to eight. Florida State University joined in 1991. Since then, three more schools have joined the ACC: Boston College, University of Miami, and Virginia Tech.

Since the league's beginning the member schools have won over 100 national championship, the first was in men's swimming in 1954. Currently there are twelve sports for men and thirteen for women in which championships are conducted.

College World Series

The College World Series began in 1947 with games played at Kalmazoo, Michigan. Since 1950 the annual tournament has been held at Omaha, Nebraska. Each year a "Most Outstanding Player" award is given at the end of the series. Some of the better known winners of the MOP trophy have been: 1965 Sal Bando of Arizona State; 1973 Dave Winfield of Minnesota; 1977 Bob Horner of Arizona State; 1980 Terry Francona of the University of Arizona; 1992 Phil Nevin of Cal State Fullerton; 1993 Todd Walker of LSU; 1995 Mark Kotsay of Cal State Fullerton; 1996 Pat Burrell of the University of Miami (Florida); 1997 Brandon Larson of LSU; 2000 Trey Hodges of LSU; 2002 Huston Street of the University of Texas; and 2009 Jared Mitchell of LSU.
