Helen Thomas, a senior member of the White House Press Corps, was born
August 4, 1920 in Winchester, Kentucky and grew up in Detroit, Michigan.
Thomas worked for 57 years as the White House bureau chief for UPI,
(United Press International). She has covered the White House and
Washington politics since the presidency of John F. Kennedy. She has
broken the gender barrier in various press clubs and continues to cover
the White House to date. In addition she has authored four books.
Helen Thomas was inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in
1981; the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 1986; and the Michigan Walk of
Fame in 2006.
