Kentucky State Parks and Resorts
|
Kentucky claims the "finest" state park system in the nation". The state operates 52 parks, 17 of which are resorts, plus shares one, Breaks Interstate Park, with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Kentucky's first state park Pine Mountain Resort Park, opened in 1924. Like all "resort" parks in the system, Pine Mountain offers a comfortable lodge, (pictured at right), with all the modern conveniences. Outdoor enthusiasts can find a variety of activities to participate in at our state parks, many of which are built on lakeshores. Boating, canoeing, camping, fishing, golfing, hiking, spelunking, and swimming, are a few of the recreational activities offered at Kentucky State Parks. You can go underground at Carter Caves State Resort Park and explore caves on your own. You can see a working fort at Fort Boonesborough State Park, or explore a preserved village once inhabited by prehistoric Native Americans, at Wickliffe Mounds State Park. |

Or if history and animals are your interest, be sure to visit Big Bone Lick State Park. Salt springs attracted Ice Age mammals, including bison, giant mastodons, and woolly mammoths, to the area. Utilizing the large collection of skeletal remains and fossils discovered on the site, re-creations, (pictured below), can be seen at the park, as well as a real life buffalo herd.

Also, on the grounds of Big Bone Lick State Park, is a small lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish. Fishing is allowed from the bank. There is a campground with 62 sites and facilities for overnight campers. |

Or if you just want to relax and get away from it all, try Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, nestled in the beautiful hills of eastern Kentucky.
The available activities vary from park to park across the commonwealth, and are too numerous to include in these pages. However, a comprehensive description with all the details of each individual Kentucky state park and resort park, plus maps and directions, can be found at the Kentucky Department of Parks Official Web Site.
