Kentucky Crosswords Newspaper Puzzle #170 Eddyville, Kentucky was first settled around 1798. Named for the eddies in the Cumberland River, it became the seat of Livingston County, Kentucky in 1799. Ten years later when Caldwell County was formed, Eddyville went with the new county and became Caldwell's seat. Then in 1854, Lyon County was carved from the southwestern portion of Caldwell and once again, Eddyville went with the new county -- Lyon, -- where it remains as the Lyon County seat today. Princeton is now Caldwell County's seat and Smithland, located on the Ohio River, at the mouth of the Cumberland River is Livingston County's seat. At its formation, Caldwell County contained not only all of present day Lyon County, but all of present day Calloway County, and portions of Fulton, (Kentucky's westernmost county), Graves, Hickman, Marshall, and Trigg, respectively.
