The first crossword published in the United States was created by Arthur Wynne, a journalist with New York World. The publication printed it in their Sunday supplement on December 21, 1913 and within a few years, the crossword craze had taken the world by storm.

Generally, the solver of "Easy" crosswords can complete the grid in a few minutes and move on to the next puzzle. In an easy crossword, the clues/definitions are straightforward and allow the solver to depend on their knowledge of vocabulary without trying to decipher the "wit" of the constructor.
