Then Governor-General of Canada, Lord Dufferin, (Frederick Temple Hamilton Blackwood, Earl of Dufferin), described Manitoba as "the keystone of that mighty arch of sister provinces which spans the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific". (Winnipeg is the capital and largest city in the "Keystone Province".)
