The tapir is a chiefly nocturnal ungulate of Central and South America and southeast Asia, having a heavy body and fleshy snout. Tapirs can grow fairly large, weighing up to 500-660 pounds (225-300 kg). They are herbivorous and feed on fruit, leaves and vegetation.
