Did You Know? (9 Down) Alaska's capital city is named for Joseph Juneau, who along with Richard Harris, discovered gold in the area in 1880. This discovery led to the settlement of the area as a gold-mining town. Juneau was officially named capital of the Alaskan territory in 1900 but government offices remained in Sitka, (south of Juneau), until 1906. When Alaska was admitted as the 49th US state in 1959, Juneau continued as its capital, although some Alaskans have attempted to have the capital moved to a more central location since that time. However, to date Juneau remains the capital city of the state of Alaska.
