Did You Know? (60 Across) RCA, the Radio Corporation of America, was established through the joint efforts of General Electric Company, (GE) and Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Incorporated in 1919, RCA has played a major role in the development of the radio and television industries.

RCA was the original parent company of NBC, (National Broadcasting Company). NBC was created by RCA in 1926 and thereafter became the first radio network and also the first television network in the United States. Other major subsidiaries of RCA have at one time included the Victor Talking Machine Company; the publishing giant, Random House, Inc., which RCA purchased in 1965 and sold in 1980; and the Hertz Corporation (rental cars); among others.

A major electronics company for decades, beginning with the introduction of the first mass-produced television set for sale to the public, RCA was also a major player in the development of communications satellites and radar warning systems. The company was acquired by, and absorbed into, GE in 1986.
