His works include the entrance wing of New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art; the pedestal that holds the Statue of Liberty; The Breakers in Rhode Island -- a 70-room mansion overlooking Rhode Island Sound -- commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895; and Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina, built for George Washington Vanderbilt, the younger brother of Cornelius.
