Did You Know? (49 ACROSS) There are an estimated 600 amusement parks in the United States today. American amusement parks can trace various elements of their heritage back to antiquity. However, the first modern "theme" park opened as "Disneyland" in Anaheim, California in 1955. Six Flags opened their first park in Texas in 1961. The Six Flags company claimed in the late 1990s, that 85 percent of Americans live within a day's drive of at least one of their parks. The Walt Disney World Resort was opened in Orlando, Florida in 1971, and remains today, the largest theme park in the world.
