Vocabulary Building Blocks: (One Across) Aces refer to people that are considered experts in a certain area, or adept in a particular skill, this term is used especially in reference to fighter pilots. Synonyms could be hotshots, or mavens. The word "ace" derives from Old French from the Latin word "as", meaning "unity or unit". When used as a noun, the word ace can also refer to: 1. a playing card; 2. a very small amount or distance; 3. a point won by a single stroke, (in tennis and other similar games). Therefore the awkward statement, "Serena and Venus Williams are tennis aces that score aces in tennis", would be correct. In slang used in the U.S. "ace in the hole" refers to "a hidden advantage".

Nichols has directed a number of high quality films including the 2007 film Charlie Wilson's War. Nichols made his directing debut with the 1966 Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
