Synonyms could be hotshots, or mavens. The word "ace" derives from Old French from the Latin word "as", meaning "unity or unit". When used as a noun, the word ace can also refer to: 1. a playing card; 2. a very small amount or distance; 3. a point won by a single stroke, (in tennis and other similar games). Therefore the awkward statement, "Serena and Venus Williams are tennis aces that score aces in tennis", would be correct. In slang used in the U.S. "ace in the hole" refers to "a hidden advantage".
