Did You Know? (47 Across) Jacob Davis, a Nevada tailor, invented the riveting of pocket corners in work pants for reinforcement. However, he did not have the finances to file the patent and asked Levi Strauss, a German immigrant, to partner with him for financial support. The pants first became popular with miners and cowboys and other outdoor workers. Strauss opened his first factory in San Francisco in the late 1870s, and the company was incorporated in 1902. Levis became fashionable with the younger set after James Dean wore them in Rebel Without a Cause in 1955. Since that time Levi's have become identified with youth in the American culture, although the jeans are quite popular today among all age groups.
