Did You Know? (12 Down) The design of the Bowie knife is credited to American pioneer, James Bowie, a colonel in the Texas Army that fought and died at the Alamo in 1836. Commonly referred to as a hunting knife, the Bowie was used by American frontiersmen as a weapon when needed. Legend has it that American frontiersman and lawman Wild Bill Hickok survived a bear attack, armed only with his Bowie knife. In another legend, Pecos Bill, an heroic cowboy of lore, is said to have, as an infant, used a Bowie knife as a teething ring.
