Did You Know? (62 Down) There are only seven symbols used to represent Roman numerals. The symbols are I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500, and M for 1000. A horizontal bar is drawn above the M to represent 1,000,000. In this manner, an additional bar is added for each million which makes it theorectically possible to write numbers to infinity using only seven symbols. When representing quantities with these symbols, the largest are placed to the left, therefore a smaller quantity to the left of a larger one indicates for the user to subtract, as in IX, the number shown to the left is of X or 10, is smaller, (I), thus you subtract the I and know "IX" stands for nine. When smaller numerals follow larger ones, you add, as VI=6. Two thousand years later, Roman numerals are still in use, although they are not practical for calculations.
