proletariat. 2. The lowest class of citizens of ancient Rome who had no
property. The proletariat is a common reference to the working class as used in
Marxism. However, the word derives from Latin: proles offspring, so
called because this class of people served the Roman state only by producing
children.
Did You Know? (30 Down) Rutherford Birchard Hayes believed
in single presidential terms and did not seek re-election after serving as the
19th president of the United States, from 1877-1881. One of seven US presidents born in the state of Ohio, Hayes was a graduate of Harvard Law School and had established a successful practice as an attorney in Cincinnati
before entering politics. Prior to his election as president, he was elected to
Congress twice and elected governor of his native state three times. As
president, he attempted to unify the different political factions of his day
with the motto: "He serves his party best who serves his country best."
