Did You Know? (11 Down) The Daytona 500, held annually at
Daytona Beach, Florida is the premiere NASCAR racing event. The first Daytona race
was won by Lee Petty, the father of racing legend, Richard Petty, in 1959. Stock
car racing began just before World War II, but it's popularity increased greatly
after the formation of NASCAR in 1948. The association governs the sport and
insisted that the race cars of the participants look similar to those found on
an American dealership's lot. Even with restrictions on modifications, the cars
today resemble normal use automobiles on the outside only. The sport currently
continues to gain fans with drivers such as Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.,
Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick, among others, gaining celebrity
status.
