Did You Know? (46 Across) A tropical cyclone is a storm system that thrives on hot moist air. A cyclone in the Northern Hemisphere rotates in a counterclockwise direction. In the Southern Hemisphere cyclone rotate clockwise. In the United States we refer to cyclones as hurricanes, generally meaning they originated over the Atlantic Ocean or the Northeast Pacific Basin. A typhoon is a tropical cyclone originating in the western Pacific or Indian oceans. In the Southern Hemisphere, all storms of this type are referred to simply as cyclones. Cyclones that are not of "hurricane strength" are called tropical storms or tropical depressions, depending on their strength. A storm must contain minimal sustained winds of 33 meters per second (or 74 miles per hour) to be classified as "hurricane strength".
