Vocabulary Building Blocks: (8 Down) phalanx (NOUN) 1. Any of the bones (or phalanges) of the fingers or toes. 2. A body of troops in close formation. 3. Any closely ranked crowd of people. (As early as the 8th century BCE, the phalanx was used as a tactical formation in war by the Spartans. There are also records of the phalanx, as a formation of soldiers, having been used in ancient Greece, where a marching order of heavy infantry, closed ranks with shields and spears overlapping.) The word derives from Latin, from Greek: phalanx, phalangos line of battle.

Did You Know? (22 Across) Tommy Lasorda made his Major League Baseball debut as a player with the Brooklyn Dodgers in August of 1954. His playing career in the majors lasted for three seasons. Lasorda went on to become one of the top managers in baseball history, managing the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1976 to 1996. With Lasorda at the helm, the Dodgers went to the World Series four times, winning twice (in 1981 and 1988). He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997, his first year on the ballot.
