Did You Know? (51 Across) Noah Webster, "the schoolmaster of America", published a speller (1783), grammar (1784), and a reader (1785). The speller, in revised form is still in print. In 1806 he published his first dictionary. Then in 1828, the monumental American Dictionary of the English Language was completed. Webster was the first lexicographer to compile American usage of English words, as opposed to the British versions. Today, Webster's name is still prominently displayed on revised and abridged volumes of his original work.
