Did You Know? (52 Across) The books of Ely Culbertson, 1891-1955, help poplarize the card game contract bridge in the United States. Contract bridge, which is an offspring of the centuries old card game, whist, is a bidding game and Culbertson's fame came when he introduced the first successful system of bidding into the game. Contract bridge is designed for four players in partnerships of two players each. Today millions of people play the game and some hire professionals to teach them to better their play. Culbertson's system of bidding was replaced by "point-count bidding" developed by American Charles Henry Goren.
