Vocabulary Building Blocks: (16 Across) weir (NOUN) 1. A low dam built across a stream to raise the water level or divert its flow, as into irrigation ditches. 2. A fence or wattle built across a stream to catch or retain fish. (A wattle is a framework consisting of stakes interwoven with branches to form a fence.) 3. An aperture in such an obstruction used to determine the quantity of water flowing through it. Derives from Old English: werian to dam up.

Did You Know? (65 Down) The Boston Red Sox have been a part of Major League Baseball since 1901, although the team had no official nickname until 1908. The Sox have played their home games at the historic Fenway Park since 1912. Currently in the 2008 season, they are the reigning World Series Champions. The Atlanta Braves are another major league team that originated in Boston. The current Braves began as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871. Other names the Braves have carried are: Boston Beaneaters, Boston Doves, Boston Rustlers, Boston Braves, and Boston Bees.
