Did You Know? (21 Down) Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin was elected to office shortly before the breakup of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) in 1991. He led Russia during its development into an independent state in the early 1990s, with his top priority being transformation of the economy. After his reelection in 1996, he took his place in history as Russia's first democratically elected president.
