Did You Know? (29 Down) Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an
English novelist whose works focused on early 19th-century upper middle class
British society. Initially, all of her novels were published anonymously. Of her
most popular works: Sense and Sensibility was published in 1811;
Pride and Prejudice in 1813; Mansfield Park, 1814; and
Emma in 1816. The novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were
published after her death. Also, other partial novels were published posthumously; as were her letters. In the past decade there has been a vital resurgence of interest in Austen and her novels, largely due to the movie adaptations and the productions of Masterpiece
Theater, being shown on PBS.
