A perfect example of a "maestro" is Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957). Beginning in 1898, Toscanini was conductor at La Scala in Milan - Italy's leading opera house; conductor at the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City, from 1908 to 1915; and conductor of the New York Philharmonic Symphony from 1929 to 1933, among other appointments. Did You Know? (51 Down) Paul McCartney joined John Lennon's band, the Quarrymen in 1956, three years before the Beatles were formed. McCartney co-wrote, along with Lennon, such famous Beatles' hits as "Eleanor Rigby", "Get Back", "Hey Jude", "Penny Lane", "Let It Be", and "Yesterday". After tremendous success with the Beatles, McCartney went on to pursue a solo career. He was knighted in 1996 for his contributions to music.
