place in literature." 2. The humanistic study of literature; such as college
offerings: English lit and etc. 3. Creative writing of recognized artistic
value, such as the plays of Eugene O'Neill, (see below). 4. Published writings
in a particular style on a particular subject, such as "medical literature".
Did You Know? (8 Down) Greta Garbo's first sound movie was
Anna Christie, (1930), based on the play by Eugene O'Neill. American
playwright, Eugene O'Neill won the Pulitzer Prize in drama in 1920 for
Beyond the Horizon, in 1922 for Anna Christie, in 1928 for
Strange Interlude, and in 1957 for Long Day's Journey into
Night. In 1936 he became the first American dramatist to win the Nobel
Prize in literature. O'Neill's home, east of San Francisco, has been preserved
as a National Historic Site, administered by the National Park Service.
