Did You Know? (55 Across) Jacques Yves Cousteau
(1910-1997) was a French naval officer, underwater explorer, inventor,
documentary filmmaker, and author of numerous books. Two of his films, The
Silent World in 1956 and World Without Sun in 1966, each won an
Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. He, along with Emile Gagnan,
invented a breathing apparatus allowing divers to stay underwater for longer
time periods. Cousteau also pioneered in underwater photography, helping
develop waterproof casings for cameras.
