Pop Music of the 1990s
(Cryptic Anagram Puzzles)

Anagrams are words or phrases created by shuffling and rearranging the letters of another word or phrase. Many times anagram clues are nonsense phrases. In the puzzle below, all of the clues are anagrams and the answers fit the "Category Title". (You can scroll to the bottom of the page to see a complete listing of the answers.)

Using the category title as a clue, rearrange the letters of the nonsense phrases to find the correct answers.

The first one in SET I is completed as an example.

Category Title: "Pop songs of the 1990s"
Anagram: "Sermon J"
Hint: This was the first single released by Counting Crows. It is from their debut album August and Everything After, (1994).

The alphabet letters in the nonsense phrase "Sermon J", can be rearranged to form the title of the pop song "Mr. Jones", and vice versa.

SET I

Category Title: "Pop songs of the 1990s"

1. Anagram: far irks some so
Hint: This single by Seal was released in 1994 and won a Grammy in 1996, after a jump in popularity brought about by having been included on the Batman Forever movie soundtrack.

2. Anagram: hit uncouth acts
Hint: This song was a Grammy Award winner and its release in 1990 helped MC Hammer's album sell over 10 million copies.

3. Anagram: hayloft rig
Hint: The album of the same name brought Madonna the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album.

4. Anagram: roles
Hint: This single was from rock singer Beck's second album Mellow Gold.

5. Anagram: an iron
Hint: This song was a number one hit for Blind Melon in the early 1990s, and the video for this song made it into the top twenty-five of MTV's Greatest Videos Ever Made, which aired in 1999.

6. Anagram: HH Delegation
Hint: This song won a Grammy Award for The Wallflowers in 1998. It was originally released on the 1996 album Bringing Down the Horse.

7. Anagram: ism sign
Hint: This single brought the British duo, Everything but the Girl, success in the US.

8. Anagram: false trawl
This number one hit was from TLC's second album and stayed at the top of the charts for seven weeks in the summer of 1995.

Category Title: "Pop artists of the 1990s"

1. Anagram: trim icy rank
Hint: This Puerto Rico native's best known song in the US during the 1990s was "Livin' La Vida Loca".

2. Anagram: tacky bb restore
Hint: One of the hits in the 1990s of this group that began as a boy band, was "Everybody".

3. Anagram: thus mom has
Remember "Walkin' On the Sun"; it was released in 1997 and brought this group to the forefront of the pop music scene and was closely followed by the hit "All Star" in 1999.

4. Anagram: ad on man
Hint: Along with one of the hits used in the SET I anagrams, "Vogue" and several other of her releases in the 1990s were smash hits.

5. Anagram: mulls as you
Hint: "Runaway Train", named the best rock song in 1994 at the Grammy Awards, propelled this group to stardom.

6. Anagram: rain van
Hint: The hit single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", was from their album Nevermind, released in 1991.

7. Anagram: her owls cry
Hint: "All I Wanna Do", which topped the charts, was from her debut album Tuesday Night Music Club released in 1993.

8. Anagram: some crests
Hint: This British group's song, "Connected", the title track from their album, was a big hip hop hit.

9. Anagram: vanish clown
Hint: "Sunny Came Home", released in 1997, off the album A Few Small Repairs, was named 1998 Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards for this performer.
